Unlocked doors lead to Providence Division thefts
In one section of south Charlotte, police believe crime would continue to drop if people just would lock their doors. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Providence Division Response Area 3, a 13-square mile area between Charlotte Country Day School, 1440 Carmel Road; and the Stonebridge subdivision off Eastover Ridge Road, reported 16 larcenies from vehicles in February 2010.
CMS to fund red light cameras?
Charlotte schools could end up funding the red light camera program if city leaders decide to bring it back. The only problem is school officials haven’t heard anything about the idea. The discussion about resurrected red light cameras in Charlotte, to serve as an extra revenue source for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, has left out one party so far: the school system.
Police investigate Ballantyne break-in spree
Ballantyne residents are being targeted by thieves while they’re away at work. Residences in the area saw 12 break-ins for the week of March 5, more than double the average number of 5, according to Detective Ole Swinson with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s South Division.
American Red Cross honors three heroes for last summer’s Park Crossing pool rescue
The American Red Cross, Greater Carolinas Chapter awarded Park Crossing Recreation Club lifeguards Aly Andrews and Claira Reisner and club member Kathy Taylor for the heroic efforts they displayed last August when rescuing 13-year-old Ian Shaver from the Park Crossing Swim & Racquet Club pool at a special March 2 ceremony.
Charlotte Checkers announce upcoming fundraisers to benefit breast cancer, animal nonprofits
The Charlotte Checkers will host the organization’s fourth annual “Pink in the Rink” game, Saturday, March 13. All proceeds from various in-game initiatives will benefit nonprofit breast cancer advocate Carolina Breast Friends. Similar to past years, Checkers players will don special pink jerseys that later will be sold in a live post-game auction.
Cotswold looks to reload
Faced with the prospect of losing its second tenant in 12 months, the 47-year-old Cotswold Village Shoppes still is set to survive the recession, tenants and owners say. The suburban mall, 274 S. Sharon Amity Road, lost Stein Mart in July 2009 and now Charleys Restaurant will shut its doors March 19.
