Career fair has plenty of job seekers, but no jobs
CHARLOTTE – Foot traffic for an education career fair at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte came to a near standstill Friday, Feb. 26, as hundreds of students jockeyed for jobs.
But more frustrating than the crowds of job seekers was the lack of jobs school districts had to offer.
Highland Creek overcrowding on to-do list for county
HUNTERSVILLE – Budget shortfalls in the next fiscal year could mean delaying construction of several schools, including an elementary school on Stumptown Road, local and county officials said.
The decisions also will eventually impact what is done regarding overcrowding at Highland Creek Elementary.
Schools moving to cut 880 positions
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is moving forward with a plan to cut more than 800 positions and eliminate middle school sports.
School staff is beginning to implement four levels of budget cuts that were presented to school board members last week, Superintendent Peter Gorman said during his weekly media briefing Wednesday, Feb. 24.
Volunteers get ‘hands on’ at James Martin Middle
Volunteers from Hands on Charlotte created four murals to brighten up the hallways at James Martin Middle School.
The colorful murals not only added art to the school’s walls, but they also focused on three themes: Martin Luther King, Jr. and his commitment to volunteering, eating healthy and staying active.
Budget woes present major decisions for CMS
Regardless of what financial scenario plays out, budget cuts and layoffs loom for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Under the best case presented to Board of Education members Feb. 17, CMS would cut 124 positions. The worst? Job losses for 879 people, including 658 teachers, with a one-year delay on the opening of both Mint Hill’s Rocky River and Cornelius’ William Hough High.
Back Creek Christian Academy wins Young Masters art contest
Two young artists from Back Creek Christian Academy have won the premier art contest hosted by Young Masters, a national franchise that showcases children’s artwork on keepsakes.
A team of Young Masters judges named kindergartner Emily Goodman and fourth-grader Matthew Barsody the art contest winners from more than 35,000 pieces of artworks.
