Board of Education faces reassignment choices
If the latest student reassignment proposal for the Porter Ridge school cluster is adopted, 297 students will change schools before classes start in August, potentially saving the district an estimated $432,000.
SPCC offers entrepreneurship programs
Entrepreneurship seminars for people who want to start home businesses and for displaced workers who’re thinking about starting their own companies are being offered by South Piedmont Community College in Monroe in February and March.
Gorman named NC Healthy Schools Superintendent 2009
WINSTON-SALEM – Superintendent Peter Gorman was selected as the 2009 North Carolina Healthy Schools Superintendent of the Year. Gorman was honored for his leadership, support and commitment to coordinated school health programs across the district.
The award was presented Nov. 13 at the North Carolina Alliance for Athletics, Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance convention in Winston-Salem.

Higher education takes a hit as well
North Carolina’s community colleges also took a hit, dropping from $1.07 billion to $999 million. Overall, the state’s community colleges will take a $14 million cut from the reduction in each of the next two years, with the North Carolina Association of Community Colleges responsible for determining how to divide that among the different campuses.
“It’s about what we expected,” said Jessica Graham, media relations coordinator for Central Piedmont Community College.
